Mersea Island is connected to the mainland by the Strood Causeway. During some high tides, the sea covers the road, making it unsafe and impassable.

If the predicted high tide is 4.5 metres or higher, the Strood is likely to be covered by seawater. Coverage is usually around 30 minutes either side of high tide, but during spring tides or when strong onshore winds or low atmospheric pressure increase sea levels, it can remain flooded for up to 1½ hours before and after high tide.

Please do not attempt to cross the Strood when the road is covered by water. Salt water can seriously damage your vehicle, and attempting to drive through floodwater puts both you and emergency services at unnecessary risk.

For the safest journey, check the tide times before travelling and allow plenty of time if a high tide of 4.5m or above is forecast. The tide table below shows the next three days of tide times, and you can use the link at the bottom to view the full 7-day forecast.
